Yesterday, the defending champion Philadelphia Phillies selected Millikan first baseman Jonathan Singleton in the 8th round of the Major League Baseball draft as the 257th overall player.

After re-evaluating his approach at the plate, and a move to the two-spot in the lineup, Singleton found his swing and led the Rams to the CIF semifinals.  More impressive than his swing might be his patience at the dish, and the athletic ability he shows on the base paths.

“I just want to play pro ball,” said Singleton a few weeks ago at the Millikan signing day event.  He can still decide to not go to the show and attend college at Long Beach State to play baseball there and up his draft stock.  “It’s been my dream forever.”  We’ll keep you updated about his plans for the future.

Also taken yesterday was Lakewood’s catcher David Peters, drafted 488 overall by the Florida Marlins.
