Friday’s Moore League match up between Poly and Wilson turned into a contest of who could take advantage of the other guy’s mistake.  The Jackrabbits won that battle with two unearned runs in the third inning on their way to a 5-2 win over the Bruins.

Poly starter Mario Gordon got stronger as the game got longer, going the distance giving up six hits and striking out six.  He also knocked in the game-winner with a single in the fifth inning.

“I could just tell my teammates were ready before the game,” said Gordon.  “It felt nice to pitch with the lead… I knew I had to go out there and take it.”

That’s exactly what the Poly coach Toby Hess saw.

“He was pumped up when we tied it, and then he was even more pumped up when he got us the lead.  This time he looked up at the end of the game and we were leading.  That had to be nice.  And he just said to himself, I will finish this.”

Wilson got on the board first with two a two-run single from Daniel Juarez in the second, but Poly tied it with two unearned in the bottom half off a walk and two Bruin errors.  It could have been more, but a great throw from Sean Buckle in right nailed the runner at the plate.  Poly stayed aggressive and scored two more after a double steal in the sixth.

Wilson starter Josh Perez pitched extremely well, and Tommy Nance came out of the pen for his second appearance of the season, but it wasn’t easy for the guy in maroon on the mound.

“It’s hard being a Wilson Bruin in 2009,” said coach Andy Hall after his team went to 1-3 in the Moore League.  “To have to follow the ’07 and ’08 teams, and the injuries… but ultimately they have to go out there and catch and throw the ball.”

On the other hand, Hess was all smiles, “I always tell the guys that in football, they talk about turnovers.  We haven’t gotten many turnovers this year, but we took advantage of them today.”
