Fresh off their tone-setting win over Wilson on Tuesday, the Lakewood Lancers came home to dominate the visiting Cabrillo Jaguars, 12-0, Thursday afternoon.  Lakewood pitchers Justine Avalos and Nicole Warren combined for the no-hitter in five innings while racking up 13 strikeouts.

Junior shortstop Eliza Crawford provided all the offense the Lancers would need, going 3-for-3 with a 3-run home run in the first inning.

“I have to say that win (over Wilson) was real big,” said Lakewood coach Andy Miramontes, whose team had lost two games to Paramount the week before.  “It was the first game of league… we needed it.  We need to roll all this into a win streak.”

Despite going hitless, Cabrillo showed good discipline at the plate and put runners in scoring position in the first two innings.  Miramontes said, “that was the best Cabrillo team we’ve played,” and that’s exactly what Jaguar coach Armando Padilla is working for.

“A couple plays here or there, and it’s a different game.  I’m not saying the result would’ve been different… we’re headed in the right direction.  We’re starting to believe.”

Other than Crawford’s shot to right in the first and Maria Sykes 3-run home run in the third, Jaguars pitchers Janessa Martinez and Katherine Reyes only allowed one earned run until walking in the blowout runs in the bottom of the fourth.

While Cabrillo tries to continue improving, Lakewood will try to keep winning on the arms of Avalos and Warren.  Avalos, a senior, played majority second base last season, and Warren, a sophomore, is playing her first year of varsity ball.

“Yeah, they’re not very experienced at this level,” said Miramontes with a shrug.  “But they’re pretty good.”

This game, the numbers certainly didn’t lie.
