With the Braveheart Classic at UC Riverside coming up next week, the Long Beach State men’s golf team stayed local to warm up, and freshman Kevin Roy shot a two-under par 70 to claim medalist honors as Long Beach State easily handled host Cal Baptist at the Oak Valley Golf Club in a dual match on Monday. The 49ers finished with a five-player total of 364, 29 strokes ahead of Cal Baptist’s 393.

Freshman Kevin Lim and junior Steve Gibson both netted 1-under par 71 scores to finish one stroke behind Roy. Junior Michael Drake and sophomore Ricky Montanez both finished with 4-over par 76 scores. Issei Suenaga carded an 83.

“This was a great opportunity to get on this golf course prior to the UC Riverside tournament next Monday and Tuesday,” LBSU head coach Bill Pourtre said. “Kevin played really well and only made one bad swing which resulted in a double bogey on number eight. He played the back nine in 4-under 32. This is the third tournament in a row where he has been low for our team.”

“As a team, we played fairly well but still made a few unforced errors,” Poutre continued. “We will have to clean those up if we hope to contend next week.”
