In the first tournament of 2009, the No. 40 ranked Long Beach State women’s golf team kicked off the spring campaign Sunday morning with a 19-over par 307 as the 49ers finished in 13th place at the three-day Aztec Spring Invitational hosted by San Diego State.

Fellow Big West Conference member UC Irvine leads the field of 18 teams with a one-under 287 as the Anteaters has a one-stroke lead over second place San Jose State (288) and six strokes over third place San Francisco (293).

Freshman Lee Lopez was the top individual for the 49ers as she carded a two-over 74 to finish tied for 19th with seven other players. Lopez recorded four birdies for the day, including two consecutive on her last two holes on the front nine.

Junior Brenda Chhuor finished second for The Beach as she shot a three-over 75 to tie for 27th with seven players.

Senior All-American Kay Hoey recorded a six-over 78 as she committed six bogey’s in the opening round. Hoey is currently tied for 53rd.

Sophomores Reina Rogers and Lindsey McAtee finished tied for 74th and 94th respectively. Rogers shot an 8-over 80, while McAtee came in with an 11-over 83.

Hillary Packard of UC Irvine sits on top of the leaderboard with a four-under 68, a one-shot lead over Danielle Cvitanov (San Francisco) and Erica Moston (San Jose State).

Second round play continues on Monday morning at the Salt Creek Golf Course as the 49ers are scheduled to tee off at 7 a.m. at the No. 1 hole. Final round action concludes on Tuesday morning.
