A young group of Long Beach State track and field athletes withstood the cold, wind and rain Friday afternoon to come away with 12 individual first-place finishes in a non-scoring dual meet at Riverside College.
In the women’s 60-meter dash, freshman Ashley Campbell claimed the top honors, finishing in 7.97 seconds. Classmate B.J. Triplett was not far behind, placing second with a mark of 7.99.
Senior Ejiro Okoro crossed the finish line in 1:39.47 to win her heat of the 600-meter run, while freshman Jessica Barnard finished ahead of the pack in the mile at 5 minutes, 22.67 seconds.
In the field events, senior Jennifer Onyeagbako was a double-winner in the discus and hammer throw. Freshmen Gabrielle Broomfield and Destanie Yarbrough also had first-place showings in the long jump (17-10.50) and shot put (43-04.75), respectively.
On the men’s side, sophomore Jonathan Evans won the 1000-meter run in 2:40.93, while classmate Josh Arrietta claimed the 3000-meter in 8 minutes, 46.24 seconds.
Sophomores Peter Fourtounis and Rajan Bains led the 49er field athletes with a total of three first-place finishes. Fourtounis was a dual-winner in the discus and hammer throw, while Bains took the shot put.
Long Beach State returns to action Saturday, Feb. 14, with a contingent of athletes in Seattle, Wash., for the one-day Husky Classic beginning at 7:30 a.m. The 49ers will stay in Washington for the UW Indoor Open on Sunday (Feb. 15).
