Relentless pressure from the Bruins led to three second-half goals as Wilson defeated the visiting Poly Jackrabbits, 4-0, on Friday afternoon.
Wilson got things started early with a 9th minute goal from winger Tony Gonzales. A lead pass bounced high in front of the box and Poly goalkeeper Ruben Rangel came out to play it. Gonzales got there a spilt second before Rangel and poked the ball over the outstretched arms for the score.
The Wilson defense were the starts of the day, though, as they only allowed one shot on goal in the first half. With goalie Javier Torres between the pipes, the back line of Sammy Skotnes, Conner Reyes and Tanner Perkins locked down, and occasionally knocked down, the Poly attackers.
The Bruins also got some nice balls sent into the box off of set pieces, but they couldn’t get on the end of them, and it was still 1-0 at half.
In the second stanza, the Jackrabbits showed a little bounce as Kevin Jimenez, Chris Viray and Robert Dominguez lead the charge, but they were high and wide on three good chances and a Jimenez header.
Wilson countered the Poly aggression with good lead passing, and that’s how Hunter Campbell netted the second goal in the 53rd minute. Midfielder Spencer Hungerford found Bryan Arguello on the left side, and Arguello quickly switched field with a beautiful ball to the feet of Campbell who was making a blindside run. Campbell gathered the ball and put it away in the far corner.
In the 76th minute, Arguello grabbed a second assist when he found Alexis Marin all alone in the box to make it 3-0. Hungerford added the fourth goal two minutes later with a mighty strike from about 35 yards out.
“When we play our best, we can beat anyone,” said Perkins, who serves as the vocal leader on the Bruin defense, the hardest hitting unit this side of football season. “But if we don’t, anyone can beat us. It’s up to us. We have to keep taking it one game at a time.”
Next week will be a true test for the Bruins, as they play Jordan and Cabrillo. A sweep of the week will give Wilson a guaranteed second place finish in the Moore League.
