It’s obvious both basketball teams at Long Beach State have a star that can take over a game at any moment, and it only took five games for the Big West Conference to take notice.  On Monday, they awarded junior Courtney Jacob and senior Donovan Morris each Big West Basketball Player of the Week.  It is the first weekly honor for Jacob, who shared the award with Cal Poly’s Megan Harrison.

Jacob (19.7 pts, 8.3 rpg, 1.7 blocks) poured in a career-high 30 points on a 10-for-18 shooting performance, including 6-for-12 from beyond the arc against Loyola Marymount last Monday. The Naples, Fla, native became the first 49er to reach the 30-point barrier since Glory Johnson accomplished the feat in 2003. Jacob was responsible for all but one of LBSU’s three-point baskets on the evening, while also adding nine rebounds and a career-best six assists.

Morris averaged 27.0 points, 3.0 rebounds and 2.0 assists per game in wins at Idaho State and over New Mexico State draining 13-of-28 shots, 6-of-12 3-pointers and 22-of-26 free throws in the two wins.

In an 88-82 double-overtime win over Idaho State on Tuesday, Morris scored 14 of his game-high 24 points in the second overtime to push The Beach to its first road win of the season and its first back-to-back wins since the 2006-07 season.  In Sunday’s 82-77 win over New Mexico State, Morris scored a season-high 30 points to help the 49ers avenge last season’s 32-point loss at the hands of the Aggies. Morris’ 30-point game was the fifth of his career.

Morris will lead Long Beach State into a pair of games this week. The 49ers host Pepperdine Wednesday at 7:00 p.m. at the Walter Pyramid and then travel to play San Francisco on Saturday.
