The waiting is the hardest part, and due to some transportation confusion, the Jordan Panthers did plenty of it before arriving more than a half-hour late to their game Friday night against Pasadena. Even though it took two hours to get from Long Beach to Pasadena, it was definitely worth the wait as the Panthers took out their road rage and romped the hosts, 36-0.
Jordan (2-0) quickly showed Pasadena what Moore League defense is all about, holding the Mustangs to -11 total yards, for the entire game! Pasadena did not complete a pass, or pick up a first down all night, and they turned the ball over twice. Oh yeah, Jordan also got a safety. You know, for good measure.
“It was fun to be on the defensive side of the ball tonight, for sure,” said Jordan coach Scott Meyer, who talked to his team about not playing to the level of the opponent. “We need to keep playing up. They only get tougher from here.”
On the Panthers’ first drive, they ran the ball 12 straight times to the Mustangs’ 14-yard line. Quarterback John Timu capped the drive with a touchdown pass to tight end Brendan Hardman. Obviously, that was all the scoring Jordan needed.
Timu and Taniela Maka each scored on seven and 14-yard runs respectively, and the Panthers took a 20-0 lead into the locker room. Overall, nine different Panthers carried the ball, eight different receivers caught a pass, and five different players took the ball into the end zone.
Utter domination is fun, but it looks like the offense will need to catch up to the defense. Penalties and miscommunication kept the Panthers from scoring twice as many points. They may need those points when the defense can’t hold the “tougher” teams Meyer mentioned to negative yardage. Just saying, Millikan will probably complete a pass or two.
