En route to a 37-10 victory over Peninsula, their second of the season, Lakewood relied on their two emerging stars; the always poised quarterback, Jesse Scroggins, and the heir apparent to recently departed Alex Fletcher, explosive running back Jerry Stone.  They combined for 358 of Lakewood’s 405 yards of offense.  After last week’s victory over Crenshaw, Lancers coach Thadd MacNeal praised both players, saying that Scroggins “was meant to be a quarterback,” and that Stone would “light up the Moore League.”

Lakewood’s defense continued to come up big when needed, holding Peninsula under 200 yards on the game.  Peninsula employs variations and Norv Turner-esque shifts at the line to try and confuse opposing defenses.  Apparently, Lakewood studied up—seventy yards of Peninsula’s total came on a long run late in the game, after Lakewood had already sealed it.  Without that play, Peninsula barely had 100 yards of offense.

Lakewood still has its big tests ahead (they open league play against Poly on October 3) but with the defense stiffening and the offense exploding, the Lancers might not be off base in thinking they’re the team to beat this season.
