From Reports By Long Beach State Sports Information Department

Long Beach State Baseball Coach Mike Weathers could smile a little wider today while playing in the annual Dirtbag golf tournament at Recreation Park Golf Course.  Before the 11:00am shotgun start, Weathers signed a five-year extension with Long Beach State, keeping him in the Dirtbags’ dugout through the 2013 season.

“The Long Beach State baseball program is nationally-recognized as one of the premier collegiate programs in the country,” said Long Beach State Athletics Director Vic Cegles. “One of the key components to that success has been Mike Weathers. We are proud that he is our baseball coach and we are even more pleased that he will be leading the Dirtbags for the next five years.”

Since taking over in 2002, Weathers has gone 263-153 (.632), advancing to six NCAA Regionals, two NCAA Super Regionals, and winning two Big West titles in 2003 and 2008 while twice being named the Big West’s Coach of the Year. Weathers also lead the Dirtbags to back-to-back 40-win seasons for just the second time in school-history.

“I would like to thank President Alexander and Athletics Director Vic Cegles for the contract extension and the confidence it shows in what our program has achieved and what we will continue to accomplish,” said Weathers.  “The length of the agreement through 2013 and the financial security it provides will enable me to finish my career at Long Beach State and keep me where I belong.”

Weathers completed a trifecta with the U.S. National Team in the summer of 2007, managing the Americans to a Silver Medal at the Pan American Games. This completed a tour that included a 1970 invitation to play for Team USA and an assistant coaching stint with the Americans in 2003. Each time he was a runner-up to the Cubans for the Silver Medal at the Pan American Games.

In 18 years as a collegiate coach at Utah (1980-81), Chapman (1984-92) and LBSU, he is 542-433-2 (.551). He spent nine years as an assistant under Dave Snow from 1993 to 2001, the final year as the associate head coach.
