February reminds me of that glass of water everyone keeps arguing about.  Is it half-full?  Is it half-empty? Does it matter?

It’s easy to get mired in gloomy February afternoons while dreaming of pigskin, summer vacations and better weather.

But if you subscribe to the half-full philosophy, February can be more like the slow progression of a jam band as they build up into that great song you’ve been waiting for.  Just around the next tune sits March Madness, the NBA playoff run, more hockey you can’t watch on television, and of course plenty of local sports to be excited about.

Most of all though, this February has turned into one final chance for baseball fans to take a breath and settle in for a season with monstrous implications.

As this month comes to an end, Rodger Clemens sits on Capital Hill while players around Major League Baseball apologize to fans and family for something they will not discuss.

If we as baseball fans don’t adopt a “move on” policy concerning the last 10-15 years in professional baseball, then we will never get over it.

The testing is in place.  The punishments have been made appropriate.  Major League Baseball has improved its product for everyone involved because of negative things like Barry Bonds’ giant head, Big Mac’s “I’m not here to talk about the past,” Attack, bloody syringes and of course, Jose Canseco.  Without them, we are still living in 1998 with blinders securely fastened.

And not only should we move on, but we should take some of that attention we put into million dollar box scores and shift it over to the many amateur baseball venues the city of Long Beach has from high school to the Dirtbags.

Do you smell that…it smells like baseball season!  So long February, see you next year.

And it’s half full, by the way, because I just poured it. Check out SportsNight!
