I’ve been thinking about this for a few days now, trying to narrow down all of Long Beach’s staggering athletic accomplishments in 2007 to tag one as the top sports story of the year.

But, like ampm, there was just too much good stuff.  Here are the finalists that I’ve narrowed it down to.

1.  Wilson High baseball captures national championship.

2.  Long Beach Poly women’s basketball wins second straight state title.

3.  Poly grad and Long Beach resident Samantha Larson becomes youngest American to climb Mt. Everest at age of 18.

4.  Long Beach State men’s basketball posts 24-8 record, wins conference championship and goes dancing in March.

5.  Long Beach Poly football wins 17th CIF title in school history.

There have to be so many stories that I’ve overlooked or forgotten from 2007, but I feel that this is a pretty solid starting five.  Sound off on your favorite, or add another to the mix.

Congratulations to all of the young men and women who work hard to represent Long Beach with talent and class.  This city has always been at the pinnacle of athletic achievement, and 2007 proved that.  Long Beach is home to the best youth, prep and college talent anywhere.  Thanks for making us proud.
