2:54pm | Former Dirtbag Adam Wilk was called up by the Detroit Tigers Tuesday, becoming the 13th Long Beach State player in Major League Baseball this season and the 39th player in program history.
Wilk spent three years with the Dirtbags, culminating in his junior year when he led the team with a 7-4 record and a 2.78 ERA, earning second-team All-Big West honors as a starting pitcher. Over three seasons, Wilk had a 10-4 record and a 3.04 ERA in 52 appearances on the mound.
After the 2009 season, Wilk was drafted by the Tigers in the 11th Round of the MLB draft, and he became the first player of that class to reach the major leagues. He is the first new Dirtbags player to earn his first time in the league since Bob Cramer was called up last September to the Oakland A’s as part of the roster expansion.
In eight starts with AAA Toledo, Wilk had 32 strikeouts and just five walks over 49 innings pitched with a 3.86 ERA. The 13 major leaguers in 2011 for Long Beach State is the most of any collegiate program in the nation.
