3:11pm | Coming off a victory over No. 29 Sacramento State, the No. 61 49ers put together a convincing win against Columbia on Sunday morning, defeating the Lions 7-0 while winning every match on the schedule.
Senior Deborah Armstrong also had a pair of wins to reach 174 in her career, a Long Beach State record.
Armstrong, already the school’s doubles wins record holder, combined with Rachel Manasse to break the record held by assistant coach Hannah Grady in doubles, beating Bianca Sanon/Natasha Makarova 8-6 to break the tie, giving Armstrong the combined wins record.
The 49ers had already won the point, as Anais Dallara/Klaudia Malenovska defeated Nicole Bartnik/Katarina Kovasevic 8-2 at No. 1, while Sarah Cantlay/Luzar def. Davis Takenaga 8-5 to sweep all three matches.
In singles, the 49ers used their newly added depth to their advantage, giving sophomore Jaklin Alawi a necessary day off with no slip in quality. Dallara continued her winning streak at No. 1 singles, defeating Bartnik 6-2, 7-5. Malenovska won another tough match, beating Sanon 6-3, 1-6, 12-10.
Armstrong earned another win in singles, defeating Makarova in three sets 4-6, 6-3, 10-5, while Manasse won at No. 4, her highest slot of the season, 6-2, 6-3 over Tiana Takenaga. Cantlay was the first player done in singles, winning 6-2, 6-1 over Chelsea Davis, and Anna Jeczmionka won in straight sets in her return to the singles lineup over Kovasevic, 6-2, 7-5.
Long Beach State closes their five-match homestand next weekend, playing LouiSville at 2 p.m. on Thursday at the Rhodes Tennis Center.
