Beach Tennis campNot unexpectedly and, in many ways quite naturally, it is that time of the summer for a catch up version of Notes on My Napkin.

As usual you must sign the waiver that the information following is not warranted by Edward Snowden, Stephanie Sampson, Tim Dickson, David O’Brien. David Benedict, Corey Johnson, Corey Van Fleet, Doug Robinson, Todd Miles, Jessica Davidson, Jennifer Chow, and a cast too many to mention of guys and gals from marketing, friend raising, fund raising and like duties.

We could add to the MIA list if we included Big West Big Shots like LBSU President Alexander and UCR AD Brian Wickstrom, both of whom are now down in the Bayou where sports are well funded (the King at LSU and Brian at up and coming Louisiana Monroe).

If you like live action better than gossip, Long Beach State will be a part of the inaugural USA Volleyball Cup, as the USA Women’s National Volleyball Team will play Japan in a three-game series this summer. Long Beach State—the July 12 contest starting at 7PM in the Walter Pyramid (All three matches will pit Japan, ranked No. 3 by FIVB against the No. 1 ranked Americans).

“It is a wonderful opportunity to prepare for tournaments by hosting quality opponents beforehand,” said Danielle Scott-Arruda (Baton Rouge, La.), a five-time Olympian who also played at Long Beach State. “Having a chance to compete in front of our family, friends and fans is awesome and far too rare. So we are totally excited. Long Beach State did an outstanding job hosting the men’s NORCECA Olympic Qualification Tournament in 2012. I am looking forward to playing in the [Walter] Pyramid again.”

And how about the baseball loving Kennedy clan? Both Adam and Bryan and even pop Tom are busy with baseball camps this summer. You can chase the details yourself at http://adamkennedybaseball.com/

Another camp of note is by Beach softball boss Kim Sowder. Goes off and on all summer, and as can be seen above, comes with a snazzy tee short along with high quality educating…

Our pals at the NCAA panel voted recently to expand the use of replay review in college basketball, and instituted the 10-second backcourt rule for the women’s game.

The Playing Rules Oversight Panel also approved a tweak to the charging-blocking foul in the men’s game and gave referees leeway when it comes to penalties for accidentally elbowing an opponent above the shoulders. The women’s game will be played with a 10-second rule next season, meaning the team with possession must advance the ball past midcourt within 10 seconds or it’s a turnover. Before the change was approved, teams could use as much of the 30-second shot clock as they wanted to move the ball past half-court. Oh yes, there will be a change to the charging-blocking foul and a list of points of emphasis for officials is designed to spark an offensive bump for the men’s game. The scoring average in Division I last season was 67.5 points, the lowest since 1981-82. Scoring has declined each of the last four seasons in Division I.

Summer camps for bigger kids, like James Ennis and Casper Ware are also fun to track. Casper has a free agent deal with the Houston Rockets and action in their summer league team and James of course is with the back to back NBA champion Miami Heat. Casper was the MVP of the Italian Basketball League following a phenomenal rookie professional season. Last add hoops, the latest sneaker to fall from the Beach locker room, Gaeta Djuma will transfer somewhere (insiders say maybe to join Deng Deng at CSU Bakersfield).

Dirtbag class of 2031 (13 plus 18) hopefully will have a space for a rattle throwing short-haired Weaver. Our own Jared Weaver and now LA Angels pitcher named his first born Aden (named Aden David Weaver in honor of Jared’s late friend and teammate Nick Adenhart) Kudos also to his wife Kristin who did the hard part and to the naming committee that saluted the Weaver dad, Dave, in his grand-sons name!

Now more baseball stuff, from old, new and “not yet” player files.

The Old is reliable and exciting shortstop Troy Tulowitzki who was picked for the MLB all star game. Next is the latest Niner to get to the show, Joey Terdoslavich who got call ed up to the Atlanta Braves and already has that first ball in his locker, from a base hit in game two! Joey was called up on the 4th of July, becoming the 44th former Dirtbag to reach the major leagues. Terdoslavich is also the most recent player to make it to the show, since he was drafted following the 2010 season. Terdoslavich was hitting .318 with 18 home runs in 85 games at AAA Gwinnett in the International League before getting the nod to join the Braves. The converted outfielder was also selected to represent the Braves in the Futures Game, an event held annually during All-Star weekend which pits top American prospects against those around the world. This year the game will be held at Citi Field in New York, the home of the Mets.

During his time at Long Beach State, Terdoslavich earned honorable mention All-Big West honors at third base after hitting .326 with seven home runs and 46 RBI after transferring from Miami (Fla.). Terdoslavich played one season with the Dirtbags before getting drafted by the Braves in the sixth round of the 2010 MLB Draft.

And then there are nice words on a couple of “not yets.”

For the second time this year, Long Beach State has tapped Valencia High School for talent. Outfielder and senior-to-be Chris McCready has verbally committed to LBSU according to Valencia head coach Jared Snyder.

McCready joins Valencia graduate and former College of the Canyons star Alex Bishop, who committed to Long Beach in April. McCready was an All-Foothill League first-teamer and The Signal All-Santa Clarita Valley second-teamer in 2013. Bishop, a sophomore catcher at COC, was named Western State Conference Player of the Year after hitting .419 with 22 RBIs and a team-high 12 doubles.

McCready batted .341 with two home runs, 10 extra-base hits and 13 RBIs as a junior in his second varsity year. “He’s probably the best center fielder I’ve seen in Santa Clarita in a long time,” Snyder said. “Every practice to him is a game. He makes plays that are amazing because he make plays like it’s a game scenario.” Guess he knows that there is a really big center field awaiting him!—DR. DAN
