Long Beach suffered a tough 2-0 loss to the Yuma Scorpions at Blair Field as they were shutout for only the second time this season. The Armada is now 14-16 on the year.
The Scorpions struck first, scoring in the top of the 2nd on back-to-back hits from Carlos Villalobos and Carlos Arroyo. At the end of two innings it was Yuma 1, Long Beach 0.
Long Beach struggled offensively for most of the night against Yuma starter Javier Ortiz. His stat line on the night was 8 IP, 5 H and 4 Ks with no runs allowed. In the top of the 6th the Scorpions struck again, moving base runner Diover Avila to third with a sacrifice bunt from Carlos Balcazar. Then leadoff hitter Deivis Rivadeneria cashed him in with a base hit to left. Yuma led 2-0 at the end of six innings of play.
Ben Fox pitched a great game in the losing effort. His stat line for the complete game effort was 9 IP, 5 H, 2 R, and 7 Ks with no walks.
Taking the hill for the Fleet tomorrow night will be Hideki Irabu who is undefeated on the year at 4-0. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05pm.
Friday is fireworks night at Blair Field. Before Friday’s game pitcher Jose Lima will sing the national anthem. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35pm.
