The Lakewood Lancers wasted little time on Friday afternoon at home.  In the bottom of the first JP Crawford led it off with a walk, stole second, and come around to score on Tyler Schultz’ bunt single.  That’s all the Lancers would need with sophomore Shane Watson on the bump as they ended it in the middle of the sixth with a 13-0 victory over the visiting Compton Tarbabes.

Watson pitched five innings and struck out ten, only giving up three hits, while the Lancers at the plate scored at least once in all five frames.

“It’s all about practice,” said Watson, who improves to 5-1 on the season.  “We practiced this week like we were playing Wilson or Millikan, and it showed.. I just trust my defense.”

The defense only had one error and the offense took advantage of almost every Compton miscue.  Lakewood stayed patient, drawing 11 walks and scoring five unearned runs.  The bottom of the lineup did a fantastic job with Tyler Leidholdt having a big day, going 2-for-2 with a triple, two RBI, a walk and two runs scored.  Zach Alofaituli went 2-for-3 from the seven hole with two RBI and Jimmy Gosano went 2-for-2 with three runs scored from the eighth spot in the order.

“We just don’t see that quality every day,” said Compton head coach Brian Reed of the one-loss Lancers. “This team needs more experience and we need to get that experience from the wins and losses… we can compete, there’s no doubt about that… we just need to learn and move on.”

Compton falls to 5-6 and 2-1 in league as they head to the Cabrillo High Easter Tournament this weekend. Lakewood moves to 14-1 and 3-1 as they start a stretch of six games in six days with tournament games over the break.
