The Lancers continue their hot start, racking up two more victories by blowing out La Mirada twice on Thursday, 10-3 and 8-0.  They’re now 9-0, with just a game against Downey on Saturday between them and a league opener against defending Moore League champs Millikan next Wednesday.  They’ve beaten their opponents by a combined 78-13; somehow, however, they just dropped to MaxPreps’ number three team in the nation.

10-3

The Lancers scored the first runs of the game in the second inning when Hunter Jones walked and was eventually hit in by a Tyler Leidholt double (Leidholt was 2-4 with 2 RBI). Zach Alofaituli (3-4 2B, 4RBI) followed with a single that drove in Leidholt. The big inning for the Lancers was the fifth.  Joseph Bernal (2-4 2B, R) started with a double, then Tyler Schultz (2-4 R, 3RBI) singled to score Bernal. After a single by Jones and a walk to Jeff Yamaguchi to load the bases, Leidholt singled in another run. Then came the dagger, a bases-clearing double by Alofaituli that put the game out of reach for the Matadores.

The second biggest hit of the game came when La Mirada was at bat in the sixth, when a Matadore didn’t slide, colliding with J.P. Yakel at the plate—Yakel went sprawling, but held on to the ball for the out, as well as the added satisfaction of seeing the La Mirada player ejected.  La Mirada scored 3 that inning, but Lakewood answered back with 3 of their own. Yamaguchi pitched 6 innings to earn his 2nd win. He allowed 7 hits and struck out 2. Nick Torres pitched a scoreless 7th to finish the game.

8-0

With two outs in the first inning, Jones (1-4 2R, RBI) singled and Yamaguchi (2-4 HR 2R, 2RBI) hit a homerun to left center to give Lakewood the early lead. The Lancers added one more run in the second on a Jimmy Gosano (1-3 RBI) single. In the fifth the Lancers put four more runs on the board, three of them coming on a Jacob Worrell homerun. Lakewood would score 8 runs on 10 hits. Shane Watson pitched 6 scoreless innings, allowed 3 hits and struck out 1. Watson has not allowed an earned run in his 18+ innings of work this season. Darren Gidley pitched the final inning and set down the Matadores in order.
