With sophomore Jimmy Norman on the mound, the Millikan Rams got another shutout victory, 6-0, over the Jordan Panthers last night at Blair Field. The lefty Norman went the distance and only gave up two hits while he struckout ten.
The Panthers got themselves into trouble again with early errors in the field, and again they had to play from behind for the entire night. The Rams got a great game from Paul Slater who had two hits, and RBI, and two runs scored.
The Rams improve to 4-2 in the Moore League and will play Lakewood on Friday. The Panthers fall to 0-6 in league, and will travel to Compton on Friday.
LBPOSTsports.com reader and Millikan Student Jordan Sanders was at the game, and the young inspiring journalist wanted to take a swing at a Moore League baseball story, so we gave him a shot to put a Millikan twist on this one, like only a beat writer could…
The Millikan Rams are getting back on track this week to repeating a Moore League Championship after a win over the Jordan Panthers, 6-0. Matthew Clampitt made his return at third base for the first time in two weeks, but was not ready yet to hit the hill, as Rams coach Scott Glasser named south-paw sophomore sensation Jimmy Norman the man on the mound. He looked like a seasoned veteran forcing early groundouts and racking up the strikeouts.
Jordan starter Rodger Hokanson threw five innings and only gave up two earned runs. The Panthers defense did little to help Hokanson, and the offense did little to stop Norman who went the distance while allowing just two hits and struckout 10.
“It felt good to get innings under my belt,” said Norman after his Moore League debut. “Hopefully I can get more as the season goes on… I couldn’t get my changeup working that much but my curveball was working well and it showed…This is a great team win and hopefully we’ll do it versus Lakewood.”
Team captain Paul Slater went 2-3 with an RBI single, sac fly, two runs scored, two stolen bases and made a web-gem grab in left to end the game.
“I was lost in the lights for a second then I took a chance, dove and caught it,” he said of the catch. “It’s a nice win to get under us at 4-2 in league, and now with Frye on the hill this Friday, hopefully we’ll do it again.”
“We got exactly what we wanted out of him. He was confident, threw strikes and was solid all around,” said Millikan head coach Scott Glasser about Norman’s performance. “Hopefully momentum will continue with Frye pitching this week.”
Good job, Jordan. Keep working hard!
