The women ruled the Beach this Fall, and after both the soccer and volleyball teams went to the NCAA’s, a few stars were rewarded for their efforts this week.
In women’s soccer, sophomore midfielder Lindsay Bullock and senior midfielder Hayley Bolt continued to rack up the postseason awards as both were named to the NSCAA/adidas All-West Region team. Bullock was a second-team selection, while Bolt garnered third-team recognition. The two helped the 49ers capture their third consecutive Big West regular season title after going undefeated in league play at 7-0-1.
In women’s volleyball, junior middle blocker Naomi Washington was named to the All-West Region team, and senior setter Nicole Vargas also earned honorable mention honors. Washington and Vargas were key members of the 2008 Long Beach State volleyball team that won the program’s ninth Big West championship and also secured a 22nd consecutive NCAA appearance, the only program in the Big West qualify for the postseason.
Bullock, a Manhattan Beach native, earned her first all-region honor after pacing the 49ers with a team-best 10 goals and 21 points. The 2008 Big West Conference Midfielder of the Year became just the second 49er to accumulate double-digit goals in a season since the program was reinstated in 1998.
Bolt, from Lakewood and Los Al High School, tallied nine goals and two assists to finish second on the team with 20 points. The four-time all-Big West selection etched her name in the 49er record books as she closed out her career at the top of the charts with 269 shot attempts and finished fourth in goals (28), assists (18) and points (74). This marks the third straight year that Bolt has been tabbed as an all-region pick.
Washington finished the season hitting. 351, good for second place in the conference standings while also ranking nationally in that category. An effective hitter, Washington’s 288 kills were third on the team, and she led the 49ers in blocks with 115 on the season.
Vargas finished an excellent four-year career for the 49ers with another strong season at setter, starting every match this year. Her 1,259 assists in 2008 placed her fourth all-time in school history, and she became the ninth player in school history to top 1,000 digs in her career, finishing with 310, second-most on the team. Washington and Vargas become the 23rd and 24th All-Region honorees in LBSU history.
