Long Beach State has used an aggressive match-up zone to start the Big West season 10-0.

The last time the Long Beach State women’s basketball team hosted a conference game this big, the team was called the 49ers, they were wearing brown and gold and the Walter Pyramid hadn’t been built. The Beach, wearing black and gold, will host UC Davis in the Pyramid Friday and Saturday at 4 p.m. with major history on the line.

Long Beach State is off to a 10-0 start in the Big West. Their last 10-0 start in the conference came in 1988-89, not coincidentally also the last time the team won an outright regular season conference title.

How have they done it? Defense. The Beach are No. 6 in the nation in steals per game thanks to their aggressive matchup zone and a full-roster dedication to that end of the court. They’ll have their hands full against Davis this weekend, though. The Aggies came up just a basket short of upsetting No. 11 Oregon last weekend and were the preseason pick to win the Big West.

“I’m very excited,” said LBSU coach Jeff Cammon. “It’s always fun to compete, especially against the best. They’ve been the best the last seven, eight, nine years in this conference. That’s our goal, we want to be the best. It’s going to be a challenging series but we believe we’re up for the challenge.”
