Last night against Millikan, Poly guard Alexis Moore put on a nearly flawless variety show for the home crowd in Ron Palmer Pavilion. His 18 points, seven rebounds, six assists and four steals helped the Jackrabbits (3-0) take out the Rams, 64-47.
Millikan came out in the press and guard Alden Darby hit his first five shots on the way to a game-high 24 points (9-for-11). The senior, who obviously loves playing against Poly no matter the sport, was perfect from behind the arc with six three pointers. The problem for the Rams, Darby was the only one scoring, and when he wasn’t they were turning the ball over.
The Rams jumped out to an 11-8 lead late in the first quarter, but turnovers and eight points off those miscues for the Jackrabbits sparked an 8-0 run to end the quarter. Moore got the Rabbits running in the second quarter, and he was 4-for-4 from the field in the last eight minutes of the first half. Poly held a 35-25 lead at the break.
“Coach always tells us we’re a defensive team,” said Moore. “So we use our defense to get the offense going…we were able to impose our will more in the third quarter.”
Taking the game over after recess had more to do with Moore being a good guard than being a good scorer. Instead of shooting while 6-for-7 with 15 points, the junior signal caller got the big boys inside involved and the ‘Rabbits outscored the Rams by 15 in the third quarter. Moore’s first shot of the second half came with two minutes left in the third, and it was a drained three pointer from the wing.
Forwards Ryan Anderson (flexing his muscle, earned in the summer weight room sessions) and Roshcon Prince (enjoying the playing time, earned because of the Shelton Boykin injury) fed on great passes and crashing the offensive boards on the way to 15 and nine points respectively. They also combined for 20 rebounds and four blocks.
Junior Alex Carmon added 14 points, seven rebounds, and two blocks. Six different Jackrabbits combined for eight blocked shots.
Millikan (1-2) will travel to Cabrillo and Poly will travel to Jordan on Friday night.
