Cabrillo finished a hard fought make up match against Compton with a 3-1 win yesterday.  But again, as has been the Jaguar story this season, the score and stat box don’t not reflect what happened on the field.

Compton earned two early chances in the 8th and 12th minutes but was stuffed by senior goalkeeper Edgar Martinez who was stellar in the first half.  Cabrillo then started racking up its share of chances and finally broke the deadlock in the 15th minute with a nice shot by senior defender Francisco (Bobo) Bautista.

The back and forth game was still tight when Junior Geo Cazall doubled the lead in the 30th minute on a nice thru ball from Wilfredo Mejia.  It looked like it might be a blow out but the Compton defense made three straight nice stops in the flow of play in succession, and in the 35th minute, Gregorio Acosta of Compton made it count and stole a bad pass in the final third and put Compton on the board, 2-1.

Cabrillo had 10 shots in the second half, which should have put the game out of reach, but put simply the ball did not go into the net.  Compton only had a few chances and when Wilfredo Mejia was pulled down in the box Diego Rivero buried the ensuing penalty kick to put the game away in the 70th minute.

With all the recent forfeits and standings shift, a Cabrillo (6-3-2) win over this same Compton team on Friday.  No matter what happens in league, as coach Pat Noyes put it, “We need to do a better job of finishing and finishing off opponents if we hope to go deep into the playoffs.”
