It’s becoming more and more clear that this year’s version of Wilson boys’ volleyball has a high celling and a low floor, and it can come and go in a flash. Yesterday at Lakewood, the Bruins showed a little more balance in three set sweep of the Lancers, 25-18, 25-13, 25-23.
Senior outside hitter Brandon Fuimaono had a game-high 16 kills and nine digs and Cory Leckie tallied 44 assists to lead the Bruins. Jake Burkhardt led the Lancers with 14 kills.
“There is a big difference between cocky and confident, and we talked about that at practice,” said Wilson head coach Susan Pescar. “You have to tell your body it’s going to be okay, and just let your talent take over… you have to have fun, and have balance so you can think. You can’t think if you’re going crazy… we’re so much better when we’re balanced.”
The match started balanced for the Bruins and lopsided on the scoreboard as Wilson took the early lead. Senior Jake MacRae dominated the middle and limited the Lancers ability to quick set, which gave the Bruins the edge they needed. In a stretch between the first and second set, Wilson outscored Lakewood 20-to-6. The Bruins took a 8-0 lead to start the second set and the Lancers did not get closer than ten.
In the third set, Burkhardt and the Lancers showed some life at the net, but Wilson opposite hitter Adam Murray was there to douse every flame. The Bruins took the lead 6-5 on a Murray kill, and on four other occasions the junior would put one down to break a tie or extend a Wilson one-point lead. Murray finished with nine kills and seven digs. Fuimaono ended the Lancer night with a thunderous kill on the left side to complete the sweep.
The Bruins improve to 4-1 in the Moore League and will travel to see Millikan on Thursday. Lakewood falls to 2-3 and will take on Jordan on Thursday.
