A.J. Luke told us before the season started that he planned on challenging his team early and often, scheduling perhaps the hardest nonleague matches in all of the Moore League. After a 52-7 loss to the Tesoro Titans that drops the Jaguars to 0-4, Luke might be wondering if he pushed his kids too hard. There’s no doubt that the stiff competition they’ve faced over the last month (Cabrillo has scored 33 points in four games, and allowed nearly 200) will help the Jaguars get in shape for the rough road ahead in league play, but it’s hard to keep a team motivated through a stretch like that.
Fortunately for Cabrillo, Luke is the ultimate motivator; the two reporters who’ve covered Jaguars games for us came away impressed with Luke’s ability to keep his team’s heads up. This week, it was Titans QB Robbie Picazo who hurt them, early and often, going 15/21 for 261 yards and five TDs. One bright flash for Cabrillo was Kyle Marshall’s 75-yard plus touchdown run, for Cabrillo’s only score of the game.
The road behind has been difficult; how well Luke can keep getting his team hyped as they enter league play will determine what comes next. They certainly aren’t getting a break, opening up on the road against a very tough Compton team, next Friday.
