Long Beach Olympians Misty May-Treanor and Lauren Wegner are Century Club’s latest Athletes of the Year, club president John Fylpaa announced Thursday.

The three-time gold medalist May-Treanor–who retired from professional beach volleyball after a legendary Olympic win in London last August–and water polo player Wegner, who helped lead the USA women’s team to its first gold medal, will be honored at the Century Club’s 57th Annual Sports Night Banquet on February 5.

May-Treanor and Wegner are two in an impressive list of local athletes who will be recognized at the annual banquet. In October, it was announced that May-Treanor along with fellow Long Beach State volleyball legends Brian Gimmillaro and Danielle Scott-Arruda will be inducted into the sport’s club’s hall of fame. The club also will recognize volunteer and professional members of the city’s sport’s community as well as the best athletes at all LBUSD high schools, Long Beach City College and Long Beach State. 

The World Series champion Long Beach PONY team will get special recognition, as will the 30+ athletes and coaches who served as Long Beach’s Olympic delegation.
