They’re invading Long Beach—Los Cheetahs, that is. And if you’re wondering if there is any association to Chester Cheetah, the mascot of the ever-delicious, finger-dyeing snack Cheetos, well, you’re absolutely right.

Following the growing popularity of the World Cup in the US, Cheetos has created its own pseudo-fantasy, trick fútbol team. The company even conjured up a villainous rival team for the neon-orange-clad heroes; Los Jefes is cast as the “uptight” (as Cheetos describes them) foil to the mischievous and fun-loving Los Cheetahs.

Cheetos02“The Cheetos brand felt this was the right time to bring consumers a new, fun and exciting way to interact with the brand through soccer,” said Chris Kuechenmeister, spokesperson for Cheetos. “With no existing trick fútbol teams out there, the Cheetos brand saw an opportunity to create an experience that brings consumers together through a sport they love, and gives them the chance to explore their inner mischief while enjoying time with family, friends and other fans.”

Given this is the inaugural game of Los Cheetahs, Kuechenmeister claimed that the first game had to be a “spectacle of epic proportions” where Cheetos “pulled out all the stops.”

That spectacle will consist of a massive (albeit smaller than Major League Soccer or World Cup fields) pop-up field, measuring 80 yards long by 45 yards wide, right on Alamitos Beach. The mini-stadium—designed with the input of the players themselves, including Los Cheetahs’ goalie, famed Mexican footballer Jorge Campos—is able to hold more than 3,000 spectators. Players will play on astro-turf, while people will be able to catch the action by way of a massive jumbotron screen.

Adding to the excessiveness of it all will be American Idol alumni Stefano Langone singing the national anthem and Campos appearing before the game to sign soccer balls and pose for photos—something you should take advantage of, given the foot master has two World Cup appearances under his belt.

As to the overtly Hispanic-focused thematics, Cheetos has said that that is the demographic they’re specifically hoping to cater to with this event, in an attempt to turn an already-loyal customer base into torchbearers for the brand. According to USA Today, the goal is to “reach Hispanic consumers and to nudge them to tweet, post or buzz via social media about the unusual promotion. The nation’s 54 million Hispanic consumers purchase 50% more Cheetos per capita than general market consumers, reports the research firm Information Resources. And the Cheetos brand hopes that if it creates a soccer stadium in the sand—albeit a temporary one—they will come.”

Los Cheetahs will play in their inaugural game on Saturday, November 8 at Alamitos Beach along Shoreline. Game-day will kick off with a Fútbol Fiesta beginning at 11AM and the game will commence at 2PM.
