CIFSS DIVISION 1 BASEBALL QUARTERFINALS
Lakewood @ Mater Dei High School, 6pm
1202 W Edinger Ave. Santa Ana, CA 92707-2191
The Lancer comeback against Riverside Poly is one to remember, but Lakewood can’t celebrate for very long because today they travel to enemy territory. The Mater Dei Monarchs (17-10,11-4) are the #2 seed from the Trinity League and have outscored their opponents 13-1 in the first two rounds of the playoffs.
Lakewood will most likely see both senior Cory Hahn (#32) and sophomore Ty Moore (#29) on the mound. Hahn has 12 wins on 15 appearances and leads the team with 84.2 innings pitched, a 0.99 ERA and 82 strikeouts. He pitched six innings and only gave up three hits in the 8-0 win against Camarillo on Tuesday. Moore has a 3.15 ERA over 26.2 innings pitched to go with 21 strikeouts and 11 walks. He usually comes in for the late innings (like he did against Camarillo) and has pitched more than four innings only once this season.
At the plate the Monarchs are hitting .302 as a team and have 144 runs in 27 games. Hahn leads the offense as well with a team-high batting average (.402) slugging percentage (.793) runs batted in (22) home runs (9) and runs scored (29). Freshman catcher Jeremy Martinez (#23) has also swung a mean stick with a .349 batting average and a team-high six doubles. He went 2-for-4 with an RBI double against Camarillo.
Good news for the Lancers is that their ace Jeff Yamaguchi will take the hill without having thrown a pitch this week. The senior captain has 10 wins on 13 appearances with a 2.10 ERA on 63.1 innings pitched.
