The ‘runs by’ headline has perhaps never been more appropriate than it was in the Cabrillo Jaguars’ 5-0 win over the Moorpark Musketeers yesterday in the wild card round of the CIF playoffs.  The Jaguars were about three steps faster at every position, and their speed was too much for the Musketeers to handle throughout the game.  The scoring started early with Miguel Hernandez taking a long ball from his goalie, Jose Duron, near the Musketeers’ box.  He took it on his chest then spun and shot it, netting the 1-0 lead, all the Jags would need.  Hernandez later took out an insurance policy on his own lead with a second goal in the 30th minute, a solo effort where he simply turned the corner on two Musketeer defenders, rand by the goalie, and kicked it in.

Cabrillo coach Pat Noyes was able to play in some of his subs in the second half, but even they were too speedy to be stopped.  After getting several good chances in the early minutes, including two free kicks caused by Musketeer players tackling Jaguars from behind to try and stop them, Fernando Jaime made it 3-0 when he cleaned up a shot by teammate Charlie Guarneros that richocheted in front of the goal mouth in the 53rd minute.  Rigo Leon scored in the 71st minute when he toed in a cross from Arturo Pineda, who scored two minutes later to make it the eventual 5-0.

After the game Noyes credited his squad’s teamwork with the offensive explosion, something Cabrillo has struggled to create this season.  “It’s just a result of hard work and sharing the ball,” he said, also crediting Hernandez specifically.   “If we’re going to have success offensively, it’s going to be from Miguel.”

They’ll need Hernandez, as well as the rest of the Jaguars, to bring their A-games on Friday if they want to stand a chance of winning—Cabrillo travels on the road to face top-seeded El Toro at 3pm.
