Out in Temecula Valley, the Cabrillo girls’ soccer team got their first taste of CIF playoffs. Like a glass of valley wine, it was bitter at first, but after it was done, the Jags were better for it, even though they emerged as 3-1 losers to the host Temecula Bears.
Cabrillo struggled in the early going to stay with the bigger, stronger TV. Temecula earned a PK in the early going to grab the 1-0 lead, and they tagged on a second goal with seconds left in the first half.
Cabrillo coach Jorge Polanco adjusted to Temecula’s effective passing from the back, and threw two more forwards up top to help the Moore League’s top scorer, Claudia Toledo. Toledo made the move payoff with a goal in the 49th minute, but the Jags couldn’t find the equalizer, even though they had two or three quality chances before Temecula added their third goal in the late going.
“We came out slow, but we got over the mental hump,” said Polanco. “We went toe-to-toe with them, even though they were much bigger… I’m very proud of these girls.”
