No matter the sport or the level, every bracket has that one team. That one team that was good all year. That one team with a group of talented senior leaders. That one team that recently changed their on floor personality with a genius coaching decision.
In the 2009 CIF Playoff bracket, that team is the Lakewood Lancers. After coach Mike Wadley moved Chrissy Tuua to the outside and Taylor Hollins to the middle, the Lancers haven’t dropped a set in the first two rounds.
Unfortunately, in every bracket there is a “best team” that no one wants to see, and Lakewood has to host that team tonight at 7pm.
The Mira Costa Mustangs have been rolling like the Lancers, and Wadley called them, “the best team we’ve seen all year.” Lakewood did beat the Mustangs in the Durango Tournament in October, but that was a three-set tournament.
In the first round the Mustangs started the bracket on the right foot, sweeping Esperanza 25-18, 25-10, 25-13. Great play from Falyn Fonoimoana (20 kills) Alyssa Anderson (47 assists) and Alex McBride (6 kills, 6 blocks) got them the lopsided win, and it was nothing new. The three-headed senior monster has been the key for Costa and it will be the same old story tonight in the Wood.
Setter Megan Moenoa will be the wild card for Lakewood, because the “go-ball” speed attack that’s worked so well in the playoffs (especially against San Clemente) won’t be enough against Costa. She will have to mix it up to keep the ‘Stangs on their heels.
