WIlson vs. Edison; Wilson High @ 7pm
The Wilson Bruins sat out the first round of the CIF Playoffs with a bye after winning yet another Moore League crown, their seventh straight. Tonight at home it’s back to business as they host a very good Edison Chargers team, the #3 seed from the Sunset League.
“Edison is very good… remember the league they’re in,” said Wilson coach Susan Pescar, who went to see the Chargers dominate Newbury Park in the opening round, 25-15, 25-7, 25-17. “The Sunset, Moore and Bay Leagues are excellent… it’s like Poly in Moore League, to where it’s almost laughable they’d be a third-place team.”
Ranked 37th in the MaxPreps State poll, the Chargers finished 6-3 in league and are winners of four of the last five. Edison has a sophomore sensation of its own in Cassie Strickland. During one week (two matches) this season the outside hitter racked up 36 kills, 27 digs and 5 aces.
Wilson will also lean on a sophomore, Rebecca Strehlow. The Bruin seniors like captains Kellie Woolever and Kellie Culbertson will need to be on their game as well, but going against these hard-swinging Orange County teams, it will be the crafty play of Strehlow that keeps teams like the Chargers on their heels.
Also, keep an eye on seniors Jenna McNaney and Candace Nicholson in the back row for Wilson. If they can dig some Strickland attacks early, that might be enough to figure out the sophomore’s tendencies.
