The Poly Jackrabbits proved they deserved a better State ranking last night at Cranshaw High with an 87-62 victory over the Cougars in the first round of the State Tournament.  The Jackrabbits (#11 in the bracket) answered an early Cougar (#6) run with a 10-0 run of their own to take a lead they would not relinquish all night.  Alex Carmon led all scorers with 25 points, and Roschon Prince added 17.  Alexis Moore, Ryan Anderson and Shelton Boykin each added 11 points apiece.

After an even second quarter, and with a six point lead coming out of halftime, Poly got two quick stops and the rest was history.  The Jackrabbits went on a 17-4 run sparked by Carmon and Prince’s work on the boards and at the rim, and outscored the Cougars 21-10 in the third quarter.  Crenshaw went without a point for more than five minutes as the Poly defense extended and forced bad shots.  When the lead hit 20 after a Carmon lay up and the foul with six minutes remaining, it was all but over.

Asked if this was his team’s best performance since the huge win over Compton at home more than a month ago, Poly head coach Sharrief Metoyer half agreed, “Offensively, yes.  I don’t like how we defended in the first half, but we fixed it… we talked at halftime about making the extra pass, and with Anderson in foul trouble, Prince and Carmon really stepped up and executed.”

With the win Poly will get another shot at Etiwanda in the second round.  Come back to LBPOSTsports for the preview and all the coverage for the State Tournament.
