At CIF Prelims on Saturday, Poly sophomore Dynasty Gammage (the Moore League’s Cross Country champion) broke her own school record for the 1600 meter. Her previous best was 5:01.81, and on Saturday she bettered that mark, lowering her personal best and the Poly school record to 4:57.03.
The five-minute barrier for the 1600m is tough to break through, and as far as we know only two other Moore League runners have ever gotten there (Trena Hull of Compton who ran a 4:47.70 in 1984 and the great Erica Sumi of Wilson, who posted a 4:53.77 in 1991). After that performance (she finished fourth in the 1600m event), Gammage came back to run the field’s fastest time in the 800m, also with a personal-best time of 2:13.93.
The top nine finishers in each event qualified to move on from Saturday’s prelims to the CIF Finals next Saturday, May 23rd at Cerritor College. There’s a whole host of local talent who’ll be competing, and we’ll bring you the complete list later on Sunday!
