They say that, regardless of the sport, defense wins championships—but a team needs offense to get there too, and on that side of the pool Wilson’s boys’ water polo fell short in a CIF quarterfinal loss to the Servite Friars, 8-7.
Wilson got strong play from goalie Noah LeBeau (11 saves, one less than Servite’s tender) and the other Bruins on the defensive side of the pool—Servite has a great offense and Wilson held them to eight goals, their average points allowed this season. But on offense, they missed lots of close opportunities, and scored five less goals than what Wilson coach Tony Martinho says was their average on the year.
Rick Dilday and Daniel Tyner scored two goals apiece for Wilson, and Michael LaBounty, Erik Vogalzang and Derek Smith each chipped in one.
