While some teams are trying to find their identity this week, or prove that they can play up to expectations, the Compton Tarbabes decided to go out and defy some. Facing questions as to how Compton and coach Calvin Bryant would perform this year following the departure of star back Donald Green, the Tarbabes proved that they can run…and run…and run without him. All-League back Curry Williams, who saw significant time behind Green last season, led the effort, with 171 yards off of 14 carries, as well as 4 TDs. But Williams was only one cog in a larger, punishing machine designed to chew up yardage and clock. The Tarbabes gained, in total, 487 yards—and that’s just from the run game!
The Tarbabes went on to win 55-0, perhaps permanently silencing skeptics who wondered about their explosiveness in a post-Green era. The decisive (and then some) victory also solidifies Bryant’s reputation as a culture-changer. The first team he coached didn’t win a single game, but he’s gone on to make the playoffs every year since. If his backs keep rolling the way they did against Bloomington, extending that streak looks like a forgone conclusion—for a start.
