After one round of play at the 14th Annual Del Walker Intercollegiate Golf Clasic, the Long Beach State men’s golf team carded a one-over par 351 at Virginia Country Club in Long Beach to finish in sixth place. Round two was suspended due to darkness and will resume on Friday morning at 8:30 a.m.
Two-time defending Del Walker champion Colorado State and Saint Mary’s share the lead of 16 teams as both the Rams and Gaels fired an eight-under 342 to hold a two-stroke lead over third place Oregon (344).
The 49ers were led by seniors Steve Gibson and Michael Drake as both players tied for eighth with a two-under 68. Gibson recorded an eagle on the par-four 14th hole that also included three birdies for the round. Drake had four birdies and two bogey’s in the opening round. Both players were bogey free on the back nine.
Freshman Benjamin Lein shot a one-under 69 to tie for 14th, while sophomore Kevin Roy and freshmanRaymond Ho are both tied for 54th with a three-over 73.
Freshman Philip Chian carded a four-over 74 to tie for 66th.
Playing as individuals, senior Robbie Berton tied for 54th (73) and sophomore Austin Love tied for 66th (74).
Scott Clayton of UC Riverside sizzled with a seven-under 63 as he sits on top of the leader board with a one-stroke lead over Daniel Cone of Saint Mary’s with a 64.
