Reports From LBSU
Long Beach State again fell into an early hole on Sunday, trailing 4-0 and would drop the season finale 4-2 against UC Irvine. Senior TJ Mittelstaedt was 2-for-3 on the day for Long Beach State.
Jake Thompson got the start for Long Beach State, but UC Irvine started the game with a double from Jordan Fox, and two groundouts would bring the run home to get the Anteaters on the board. Three hits in the second inning, along with a Dirtbag error would score three more as UCI was out in front of The Beach 4-0 after two.
The Dirtbags loaded the bases in the third inning but got nothing from it, but with the bags juiced again in the fifth, a groundout scored one run, and Steve Tinoco followed with an RBI single to cut the lead in half at 4-2.
Eric Pettis would hold on though, allowing nine total hits but no further runs in a complete game as the teams went scoreless over the final four innings.
Prior to the game, the team recognized seniors Tre Dennis, David Brown, and Jason Markovitz along with Mittelstaedt and Tinoco in their final game with Long Beach State. The team also had a ceremony for head coach Mike Weathers, who coached his final game with the Dirtbags before heading to retirement.
Long Beach State baseball will introduce Troy Buckley as the new head coach of the program in a press conference to be held Tuesday, June 1 at 1 p.m. Come back to LBPOSTsports.com for that video.
