Reports From LBSU

Devin Lohman’s two-run home run in the ninth cut the UC Davis lead to one, but the three unearned runs the Dirtbags surrendered earlier in the contest proved to be one to many in a 3-2 loss Friday. Andrew Gagnon pitched 5.2 innings and allowed four hits while striking out four.

Gagnon and Aggie starter Dayne Quist were in command from the beginning, as neither team scored through the first five innings of play. The Dirtbags got through a scare early in the second inning, as UC Davis got singles from their first two batters, but a shallow fly ball, a strikeout and a groundout got Long Beach State out of the inning with no damage.

Jonathan Jones picked up Long Beach State’s first hit in the fourth inning, and a leadoff double by Joey Terdoslavich led to the Dirtbags’ biggest threat to that point, but the third baseman was stranded at third to keep the game scoreless.

UC Davis finally broke the deadlock in the sixth inning. A hit batter and a walk gave the Aggies a pair of runners, and with two outs, an error on a ground ball scored both runners to put UC Davis in the lead 2-0. The next inning, Paul Politi scored after a pair of Dirtbag errors and a third unearned run made the score 3-0.

Quist moved through eight innings with no score, but after coming back for the ninth inning, Brennan Metzger led off the inning with a double, and two batters later Lohman cracked his first home run of the season to cut the lead to 3-2. Matthew Lewis then entered the game for UC Davis and picked up the last two outs to collect the save and give UC Davis the win.

Due to poor weather forecast for Sunday, the remainder of the series between Long Beach State and UC Davis was rescheduled as a doubleheader to begin at 11 a.m. Saturday morning.
