Like a winning streak this season, there was a flash of light for the Dirtbags in Fullerton yesterday.

Long Beach State took an early 1-0 lead following TJ Mittelstaedt’s seventh triple of the season and an RBI single by Devin Lohman, but Cal State Fullerton and Noe Ramirez took over the rest of the way in a 7-1 win Satruday.

After surrendering the solo run in the second inning, Noe Ramirez was in complete control, retiring 19 straight batters before a single by Jonathan Jones in the eighth inning. Ramirez pitched eight innings, allowing just three hits while striking out seven.

Jones stole second after reaching in the eighth, the team’s 118th steal of the season, placing the 2009 team second in school history in that category. They rank only behind the 1980 team that stole 123 in 68 games.

The Titans took the lead in the third inning, taking advantage of a little wildness from Jake Thompson. Cal State Fullerton put two runners on with a hit batter and a walk, which was followed by a single from Gary Brown to tie the score. A sacrifice fly picked up the second run of the inning, and then a double by Khris Davis capped what would end up being a four-run inning for the Titans.

Jared Clark added a solo shot in the fifth inning for Cal State Fullerton, helping the Titans extend their lead after the Dirtbags turned two to get the first two outs of the inning.

With one runner on in the sixth, the Titans added another insurance run on back-to-back singles by Joey Siddons and Christian Colon, taking a 6-1 lead. Cal State Fullerton added a final run in the eighth on a solo home run by Joe Scott.

Long Beach State finishes the 2009 baseball season tomorrow, facing the Titans for a third time on Sunday, May 23. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m., a third night game in the series.
