Watching the Dodgers dance on the field after kicking the Cubs out of the playoffs was surreal; even though it was the second time the Boys in Blue partied in the last ten days. This being the first playoff series victory since 1988 means this is something I’ve never seen before, and I’m not alone.
If you’re in your 20’s and a Dodger fan, you’ve never seen a champaign bath that meant anything more than a Division title. My Dad always tells me the story of holding me in one arm, and putting his fist through the ceiling in celebration after Kurt Gibson deposited that ball in the right field pavilion in ’88. I didn’t do anything as dramatic, but needless to say, I was pretty excited after Broxton struck out Soriano.
Seriously, I’m having a hard time putting my emotions on paper, which is usually not a problem for me. I’m becoming increasingly superstitious to the point where I won’t move my Dodger jersey in my closet. I’m all a twitter. Like a true baseball fan, too superstitious to be superstitious.
I mean, we’re playing solid baseball right now. Better than we’ve played all year. Young Furc is back at the top of the lineup and doing what he did before the back injury. Pitchers are putting quality starts back to back. The young players are showing veteran patience at the plate, and Man Ram is being Man Ram. I said before the Cubs series that no one wanted to see us. We’ve got that classic playoff team with the perfect mix of young players, seasoned vets, good pitching, better defense, and something to play for.
Ask the Angels what it’s like to win the division early, and then try to ratchet up the intensity for a playoff series. We chased the D’backs down and then left ‘em in the dust. We’re so hot right now like Hanzel… you know what, this is wrong. I shouldn’t be writing this article. I should be superstitious about this and treat the Dodger success like a no hitter in the seventh inning.
As a life long Dodger fan, I’m going to just enjoy the next week of playoff baseball. Win or lose, the franchise took a step forward. So come back to LBPostSports.com for my game blogs and thoughts as the Boys in Blue chase down the N.L. pennant…. I can’t believe I just wrote that.
