Looking at the numbers, this shouldn’t be a surprise to anyone.
Tampa Bay Rays third baseman and former Dirtbag Evan Longoria has been named the American League’s starting third baseman for the 2009 MLB All-Star Game, to be held on July 14th in St. Louis.
Longoria becomes just the second Long Beach State player to be honored as a starter in the Fall Classic, joining the 2000 AL MVP and five-time all-star Jason Giambi in that distinction.
Longoria remains the third Long Beach State player to play in the All-Star Game, with Giambi and Steve Trachsel. Longoria was selected as a reserve last year in 2008 on the way to winning the 2008 AL Rookie of the Year award.
In 2009, Longoria is hitting .293 with 16 home runs, and is third in the American League with 63 RBI for the Rays.
