The Poly Jackrabbits kicked it into another gear behind great guard play from twins Brittany and Ashley Wilson in their 67-28 win over Millikan last night in the Ron Palmer Pavilion. Brittany had a game-high 16 points and Ashley added 10 points. Sheila Boykin had 12 points and ten rebounds. All three only played three quarters.
“This is a rivalry,” said Buggs after the game when asked if his girls were extra excited for this game so early in league play. “We don’t lose in league often… they got us a few years back, and we don’t forget that.”
The turnovers piled up early (14 in 8 minutes) and the game crawled out of the first quarter, but when Boykin got two rebounds and put the second one back for the 11-5 lead, Poly went on a 16-0 run.
The seven-minute stretch included back-to-back And-1 layups from Ashley, plus three steals and 12 of Brittany’s 16 points.
“It’s been since the first day they set foot on campus,” said Buggs of the Wilson twins’ impact on the Jackrabbit program. “Their energy and intensity… they just go hard all the time. Even in practice, they just go at each other. Nowadays you just don’t see kids like that… their motors just don’t stop.”
Rachel Flores drained a few threes for Millikan in the second half and had 11 points while Mimi Patterson led the way with 12 points. Millikan drops to 2-2 and will travel to Cabrillo on Friday.
Poly will try to pound it inside and slow down Jordan in North Long Beach on Friday in a battle of the Moore League unbeaten.
