The winds of change blew hard at Cabrillo high school on Thursday as the Lakewood Lancers’ 3-0 victory and a coin flip on the sideline decided playoff seeds for the Moore League in the upcoming CIF Playoffs.
On the field, the Lancers got the wind at their back in the opening half and took full advantage. They kept the Jaguar defense on their heels and possessed the ball almost exclusively, breaking through in the 15th minute when Kassidy Hause brought the ball across the top of the box nicely. Her cracking shot hit squarely on the crossbar, and freshman midfielder Kendahl Fisher was there to one touch the rebound into the back of the net to make it 1-0.
Fifteen minutes later, Cabrillo gained some momentum and had their best chance of the half when Maria Lopez and Kimberly Jones played the give-and-go game near the corner of the box. However, Alyssa Bolanos stole a pass and gave it to Hause for the counter attack. Hause quickly found Fisher on a run down the sideline and the freshman made one defender miss before making Cabrillo goalkeeper Leslie Navarro miss and tapped it in for the 2-0 lead.
At half on the visitors sideline, Moore League Secretary Jim Lineberger, Poly coach Teri Collins, and a Wilson assistant coach met to decide who would hold the #1 seed in the Moore League for the playoffs. Wilson got to call the coin toss because of the overall records, and Poly won the toss with tails, because it never fails.
Back on the field, Lakewood continued to go at the Jaguars despite the wind, and Hause got herself a goal with a powerful strike in the 75th minute after a long run down the far sideline.
With the win, Lakewood grabs hold of second place in the Moore League behind co-champs Wilson and Poly. Cabrillo is still going to the playoffs for the first time in school history. CIF Playoff seedings will be available here on LBPostSports.com on Monday.
