After a long road trip, nothing feels better than your own pillow.  On Friday night, the Women’s Volleyball team laid their heads down home at the ‘Myd, and Long Beach State posted a comfortable 25-14, 25-18, 26-24 win over good Santa Clara squad. Quincy Verdin finished with 12 kills on .500 hitting and Naomi Washington added 10 kills.  The 49ers hit .404 with only nine errors in the three games, while holding the Broncos to a .183 mark.

After spending the last two weeks in Florida and Massachusetts, the 49ers made the most of their return home in the first set.  LBSU dropped the first point but then opened up a 14-7 lead, forcing the Broncos into four consecutive attack errors. The Beach cruised from there in the opener, hitting an amazing .667 against a good defensive team, as the team had 15 kills on 21 attacks with just one error in the opening set.

While the second set started much closer, Verdin helped Long Beach State move from a 10-10 tie to a 16-12 lead. Finally, the team closed out the set by winning five of the last six points for a 25-18 victory.

After the Broncos tied the third set at 24, Brittney Herzog put down her fifth kill of the night.  An attack error by Santa Clara, their 19th, ended the match in Long Beach State’s favor.

A balanced attack from Long Beach State allowed four players with eight or more kills to lead the team, while Nicole Vargas and Herzog made the most of their opportunities, hitting .600 and .455 respectively to help the 49ers average on the night. Defensively, Vargas added 10 digs to go with her 35 assists to lead the team, while Iris Murray and Caitlin Ledoux both finished with eight.

Long Beach State will try to produce a similar performance as the two teams have a rematch Saturday night. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m. in the ‘Myd.
