After developing the concept of Little League level golf — and hosting the first two national championships — the USGLL will move its annual event from Long Beach to Binghamton, New York this summer. The organization was founded by junior golf advocate Kevin Flanigan and he hopes to bring the even back to the city in future years.
The USGLL press release says,
“In keeping with our mission to grow the game of golf and as a 501(c)3 non-profit organization dedicated to providing Team Match Play competition for young golfers, as well as providing a National Championship venue for affiliates of the USGLL each year for those that qualified, the USGLL Board of Directors has made the decision to hold this year’s USGLL National Championship at the Traditions at the Glen Golf Course & Resort in Binghamton, New York. The city of Binghamton and the surrounding communities have made a very compelling proposal and have enthusiastically embraced the opportunity to host the USGLL National Championship for 2012.
“We look forward to their warm welcome and hospitality during National Championship week! The USGLL would again like to thank the City of Long Beach for past participation in the 2010 and 2011 National Championship in Long Beach where the program originated and the USGLL is head quartered.
“Understandably, due to continued economic difficulties that we all are enduring, it has challenged the USGLL to look elsewhere to provide the event where it can be affordable for all USGLL affiliate’s boys and girls that are participating. On behalf of the local USGLL- Long Beach Affiliate we would like to thank the sponsors, volunteers, and City of Long Beach Parks, Recreation and Marine, who continue to support the boys and girls in their sport of golf in Long Beach.”
