A Press Release By Dan Gooch

On Tuesday, February 10, 2009 the Long Beach Century Club will induct four of it’s oldest members and great local sports lovers alike into their Hall of Fame.  The Class of ’08 will consist of:

Perry Moore
Former Athletic Director of Long Beach State, Moore has had an exemplary career in sports.  From his early days as a track star ranked as high as 5th in the nation in the pentathlon to his tenure as the Athletic Director at Long Beach State, he’s always led by example.  In addition to his direct involvement in various sports, Perry is a leading booster for the 49er Basketball team having missed only 3 or 4 games in the last 20 years.

Perry and his former wife Pearl were inducted into the Long Beach State Hall of Fame for their many contributions and more recently they sponsored the Perry Moore Scoreboard in the ‘Myd.

Lisa Fernandez
Arguably one of the finest softball pitchers to ever take the mound, Lisa led the U.C.L.A. Bruins to two National Championships and two runner-up finishes in her four years.  She was the Pac 10 Player of the Year three times, was a three time Olympian and won three gold medals.

Jericho Poppler Bartlow
Crowned the United States Surfing Champion in 1970, Jericho showed what hard work and determination could accomplish.  Raised in Long Beach during the 50’s and 60’s, Jericho’s fame would spread world-wide.  She was one of the first females to blur the line between male and female surfers.  She co-founded The Women’s International Surfing Association and the co-directed the first Women’s International Professional Surfing Championships.

Martha “Marty” Walker
As wife of one of the Long Beach’s finest golfing representatives, Del Walker, Marty & Del traveled the world playing the sport they loved.  Her professional career saw her teaching handicapped children at Wilson High School where she also coached the boy’s golf team.  Her Bruin teams included many notable golfers including Paul Goydos.  Marty also coached the women’s golf team at Long Beach State for 12 seasons from 1985-96.

Throughout their lives they did everything together and the Long Beach Century Club is taking the opportunity to “correct the record” and include her in our Hall of Fame alongside her husband, as it should have been done when he entered.
