Reports From LBCC
Freshman right fielder Chris Jacobs launched a pair of homeruns but it wasn’t enough as the Long Beach City College baseball fell to visiting Irvine Valley College 3-2 in 10 innings on Friday at Joe Hicks Memorial Field.
Irvine Valley took the three-game non-conference series 2-1 and improved to 8-18 overall with today’s win while Long Beach fell to 11-15.
Trailing 2-0 in the bottom of the seventh, Jacobs smashed the first pitch he saw from IVC starting pitcher Cameron Slach to lead off the frame and finally get the Vikings on the board.
Jacobs went deep in his next at bat off Irvine Valley reliever Mike Sianez with one out in the ninth to tie the game and send it to extra innings.
But in the 10th, IVC third baseman Micah Gorman sent a line-drive shot over the 380 feet sign in left-center field off Long Beach relief pitcher Johnny Fageaux to send Irvine Valley the win.
LBCC starting pitcher Edwin Santiago put together an impressive outing in the no-decision. He tossed eight innings and allowed two runs (one earned) and four hits to go with eight strikeouts.
Jacobs (3 for 4) had three off LBCC’s five hits to lead the Vikings at the plate. Fageaux picked up the loss to drop to 1-1.
For IVC, Slach tossed seven innings and scattered four hits and allowed one run in the no-decision. Sianez (2-3) earned the win with three innings of relief. He allowed just one run and one hit while striking out four.
Long Beach returns to action on Thursday (Apr. 8) when it travels to Cal State LA to face East Los Angeles College in a 7 p.m. South Coast Conference game.
