It was déjà vu all over again for the Long Beach City College football team against the LA Harbor Seahawks at Veterans Stadium last night.
A year ago in the season opener, the Vikings scored on the opening drive and then got boat raced in the second half. Last night, it was more of the same as the Seahawks our-gained Long Beach 737 yards to 272 on the way to a 71-43 victory.
On the first play from scrimmage, Viking DB Thomas Mahoney took a fumble back to the house before QB Kevin Lubner hit Darrius Young for an 80-yard touchdown on the first offense play to grab an early 14-0 lead.
But the only thing that would’ve made any difference was 72 points as Harbor and quarterback Dominique Blackman racked up 34 first downs. The big QB went 32-for-47 with six touchdowns on 535 yards. Receiver Dwayne Frampton led the way outside with 15 catches, 234 yards and two TDs.
“I’m from Carson where we just run the ball,” said Blackman. “I just came here to throw the ball and make plays, and that’s what we did tonight. We just made plays… I’m sending this video out tomorrow morning.”
Harbor climbed back into the game in the second quarter with Blackman touchdown passes on consecutive possessions (a total of six plays). LBCC kick a field goal to make it 17-14 Vikings, but the Seahawks scored 28 of the next 34 points to take the lead into halftime.
The Viking offense scored on the first drive of the second half, but Jon White returned the ensuing kickoff 83 yards for the touchdown and a 49-29 lead. Long Beach would not get any closer.
Lubner finished the night 11-for-25, 182 yards and three touchdowns. Poly grad Darius Williams-Fox led the defense with 10 solo tackles.
